The name competition for the Turku Music Hall has come to a conclusion. The competition was open from 15 November to 15 December in the Kerrokantasi service, receiving a total of 1730 votes. Turun musiikkitalo Fuuga, or Turku Music Hall Fuuga, received 635 votes, making up 37 per cent of the votes.

-Turku Music Hall Fuuga is a great name, as were all the other suggestions. I would like to thank Turku locals and everyone who participated for voting for the name of the Turku Music Hall, says Mayor of Turku Minna Arve.

The name, Turku Music Hall Fuuga, was picked from audience suggestions. Name suggestions and ideas were collected over summer 2022 in the Kerrokantasi service. Of the hundreds of proposals, four names were picked for the competition. The competition was organised in late autumn with votes going to the candidates of Turku Music Hall Aura, Turku Music Hall Sointu, Turku Music Hall Fuuga and Turku Music Hall Harmonia.

The votes were split between the suggestions with Aura receiving 25% or 435 votes, Sointu 21% or 363 votes and Harmonia 17% or 297 votes. Fuuga won the competition with 37%, or 635 votes.

Fuuga (or Fuga in Swedish) is a beautiful name that does not pose challenges for international audiences.

-The word fuuga translates to fugue, a compositional technique where a piece of music is created by joining several independent voices. In the same sense, the new Turku Music Hall will also consist of several independent parts – people, facilities, atmosphere and art, all of which will create interesting harmonies together. Johann Sebastian Bach is considered to be the most masterful fugue composer, explains Nikke Isomöttönen, Intendent of the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Turku Music Hall is one of the major cultural investments by Turku that strengthen the city’s image and position as an interesting and attractive cultural destination.

When it is finished, the Music Hall will not only be the new home for the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, but a living room for all locals.

The Music Hall, which will complement the chain of culture-focused buildings along the Aurajoki river, will be an open and active place for all locals and an interesting destination for everyone visiting Turku. Featuring top-of-the-line architecture and acoustics, the Music Hall will attract even more international performers and visitors to Turku.

By the current schedule, the Turku Music Hall will be opened in early 2026.
